August, Jack, Summer, Julian? What do these names have to do with Wonder? Well, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, is an amazing book and a heartwarming story that keeps us on the edge of our seats. The attention grabbing cover sucks us into the book with a boy with one eye and lopsided ears. This cover definitely leaves us to Wonder.
August is not like every other boy. Sure, he has a normal family, normal house, normal dog; but August’s face doesn't look normal. He’s our age and he’s had about 30 surgeries. He’s about to face his biggest problem yet… 5th grade!
We interviewed our teachers, Ms. Crowell and Mrs. Prunier, about their feelings on Wonder. One of our questions for the teachers were “How do you feel about Wonder?” Ms. Crowell said, “It was a great book to expose to 5th graders to because of all the current issues it addresses.” Our second question was, “ How do you relate to August?” Ms. Prunier said, “Having a student in my class like August might be challenging. I would hope to make a comfortable classroom.”
This book goes along with the bullying program the 5th grade is following. We learned about treating people nicely, no matter what they look like. Wonder is a great book for kids to read!
